What's in a Prague street name

Every street in Prague, one by one.

Prague 4, day 102: Na strži

A ‘strž’ (feminine) is a ravine, or a gully; its synonym, ‘rokle’, is more commonly used.

In English, a ravine is typically larger than a gulley, but smaller than a valley. In any case, there was originally a ravine around here.

At least as far back as 1841, a road was here which led from Pankrác to Krč; it was named Na strži in 1925.

Part of Na strži is currently inaccessible, all in the name of the famous Line D of the Prague Metro: https://www.praha4.cz/Vystavba-metra-D-uzavre-na-nekolik-let-cast-ulice-Na-Strzi.html.

By about 2029, there should be a metro station here, and it will be called Olbrachtova: https://www.dpp.cz/metro-d/stanice/stanice-olbrachtova.
