Prague 4, day 93: Pankrácké náměstí
Pankrácké náměstí (Pankrác Square) was built in 1931. I walked around – a lot – and couldn’t find a street sign, so here’s a picture of the square instead. Not Prague’s most beautiful. However, when it was first built, Pankrácké náměstí included a small stadium, Na Bělce, which belonged to a football club, SK Nusle. Continue reading

Prague 4, day 20: Pod Terebkou
Pod Terebkou (‘Under Terebka’) was built in 1935. Once upon a time, this area was either a vineyard or just a regular field, but, in 1841, a homestead was built here. Later in the century, it was purchased by Rudolf Tereba (1851-1904), an architect who had travelled around Italy, later settling in Prague and building Continue reading

Prague 1, day 284: Těšnov
Originally publishe3d on X on 12 July 2024. The first written mention of Těšnov, a settlement just outside the New Town walls, and only consisting of a few guardhouses, dates from 1437. (Photo of the Pořící gate before its destruction in 1875) You might remember that Pořící – immediately to the west – was largely Continue reading

Prague 1, day 208: Valentinská
Originally published on X on 24 April 2024. I think we can skip the part in which I explain what St Valentine is the saint of, and the date on which we celebrate him. But here’s some music. Anyway, from about 1253, St Valentine’s Church stood here, where, rather than the current-day street, there was Continue reading

Prague 1, day 140: V Cípu
Originally published on X on 11 February 2024. A cíp is a tip or a corner. And, as this is basically an extension of Panská (https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2024/09/23/prague-1-day-139-panska/) which doesn’t lead anywhere, this seems quite apt. First referred to as ‘in vico dicto Czyp’ in 1395, it was also known as Heršova for a time, as a Continue reading

Prague 2, day 165: Lazarská
Originally published on X on 24 April 2023. Lazarská was built around 1348, when the New Town was founded. Until the early 18th century, this was known as Dolejšek Dobytčího trhu, i.e. the part just below the Livestock Market, i.e. present-day Karlovo náměstí (https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2024/09/01/prague-2-day-164-karlovo-namesti/). After 1848, when Karlák got its current name, this street came Continue reading

Prague 2, day 130: Melounová
Originally published on X on 20 March 2023. Melounová was built in 1890. Confession: I sometimes get *really* nervous about getting the diacritics on these street names wrong. So it was something of a comfort to find out that, until 2019, the street sign here was incorrect (Melounova): https://encyklopedie.praha2.cz/ulice/75-melounova Melounova would imply the existence of Continue reading
