What's in a Prague street name

Every street in Prague, one by one.

Kapitulská was definitely built before 1895.

We know this because that was when it was renamed: until then, it was called ‘Kořínkovo pole’, Kořínek’s Field, after a local family.

‘Kapitula’ translates as ‘chapter’ (in the ecclesiastical sense), and is also the name of a local hill that was owned by the Vyšehrad Chapter (https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2024/08/24/prague-2-day-94-k-rotunde/) until the Hussite Wars of the early 15th century.

The hill is still there (sorry, I’ve just realised I’m mansplaining the map above), and serves as a sport and recreation area. As an example, here’s a tennis and volleyball club: https://www.teniskapitol.cz/.
