What's in a Prague street name

Every street in Prague, one by one.

Děkanská was built in 1900.

Until 1947, it was called Lindnerova.

According to ‘Ulicemi města Prahy’ by Václav Hlavsa (basically What’s in a Prague Street Name, but as a book in 1958), it was named after Genoveva Lindnerová (1817-75), who set up a foundation at the University of Prague for pharmacy students.

However, that would require the street to have been be called Lindnerové, so the jury’s out.

A děkan is a dean, an official at a university (in my university days, it was the person was in their mid-20s – and therefore ancient-seeming – who told you to all to STFU because it was 23:30 and people were trying to sleep).

Making today’s street another one reminding us of Michle’s former status as the property of Charles University.
