What's in a Prague street name

Strmilovská was built in 1941.

Strmilov is a town in South Bohemia, bordering Moravia. Strmilov proper has a population of 1,100, or 1,400 if you include four other villages which are part of the district.

While ‘strmý’ means ‘steep’, it’s believed that the name could have other sources: it could be from Střemil, an Old Czech men’s name, or it could be derived from the Middle High German ‘Tremel’, meaning a beam.

Probably first settled in the early 1200s, Strmilov was elevated to town status in 1385. Owned by the noble Hradec family, it ultimately passed into the hands of the lords of Slavat when that branch of the Hradec family died out in 1633.

The Slavats would die out in the 1700s.
