What's in a Prague street name

Every street in Prague, one by one.

Pod Stárkou existed by 1841; its name is first mentioned on a map in 1912.

Stárka was a vineyard in the area, apparently existing back in the Middle Ages, though I wonder how sure we can be of that when we barely know anything else about it either.

In the 1920s, when Prague was expanding rapidly, and housing was needed, an ’emergency colony’ was built round here. Again, there’s not much info about it, but remnants of it existed until about the 1970s.

For another example of an emergency colony – a regular topic in Prague 4 – see https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2025/06/05/prague-4-day-109-u-dekanky/.
