What's in a Prague street name

Every street in Prague, one by one.

Ohradní was built before 1900.

An ‘ohrada’ is a fence or an enclosure – as seen way back when this project started in Žižkov: https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2022/11/19/prague-3-day-11-na-ohrade/.

Here, there was once a meadow behind Michelský dvůr (Michle Courtyard; mentioned yesterday on https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2026/11/02/prague-4-day-490-most-sue-ryder/).

It was surrounded by a fence, hence the area being known as ‘Za vohradou’ (Behind the Enclosure) according to a map from 1841, and hence the street name now.

Among the buildings on the street is a secondary school, Gymnázium Elišky Krásnohorské, whose name is a reminder of the founder of another school, as discussed on https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2024/10/29/prague-1-day-224-elisky-krasnohorske/.
