What's in a Prague street name

Na staré vinici was built in 1935.

A ‘vinice’ is a vineyard or a vinery. There was once one round here (actually, there were probably several, and you can still imagine them when you walk around the area).

Hence the street being named after ‘the old vineyard’.

In the 1920s, Prague’s population was growing too quickly for new housing to keep up (as opposed to the 2020s, when new housing doesn’t seem like it would be able to keep up with the most basic task you can possibly think of).

Therefore, various ’emergency colonies’ – makeshift housing built to accommodate new arrivals – sprung up. We’ve covered some before, such as on https://whatsinapraguestreetname.com/2025/09/08/prague-4-day-166-nad-ondrejovem/.

One such colony was created round here, and was called Na vinici. In 1926, it had ten houses; no remnants survive today.
